Computers go wrong, they crash, they fail to start, they give you a nice blue screen when you're least expecting it, they drive you demented and make you want to throw them through the window! But, when you are at your wits end, shouting obscenities in their general direction, remember one thing, they are complicated, VERY complicated! In 1969 man landed on the moon. Apollo 11 had on board on of the most advanced pieces of computer technology that NASA could develop. It had 1Kb of RAM and 12Kb of ROM (the equivalent of a hard drive) and a processor speed of 1Mhz. This was high tech, very Star Trek, something that all the computer anoraks would have swooned over, I of course was far too young to care!
To put things into perspective, an off the shelf PC from your local store has at least 1,048,576Kb of RAM, a 18,874,368 Kb hard drive and a processor speed of at least 2000Mhz. A 1969 computer with the equivalent memory to a 2009 basic PC would have needed a building the size of about of 400 acres! So in thirty years The memory capacity of your computer has increased well over 1 million times, it's more than two thousand times faster, but the technology is now almost 9million times smaller! Of course it's complicated, and you're surprised when it throws a wobbly!
There are certain things that you must ensure that you do with your PC, in my opinion, religiously.
* Keep the software up to date, in particular the Windows updates
* Use good anti virus software which is updated regularly
* Use a good firewall (especially if you use an ADSL connection)
* Regularly use anti spyware software
* Ensure you've made recovery discs for your PC if necessary
* Ensure that any networks you use (and that includes your Livebox) are protected
* Run hard disc scans regularly
* Backup your data, photos, music, emails and anything else of value
* Minimise the number of programmes you install and uninstall
* Always shut down your PC using the software and not the power button!
* Don't use file share programmes (Limewire, Emule etc) unless you really know what you are doing security wise
