"I’ve tried to set up my english email account on Orange and it receives emails okay, but it won’t let me send them, what have I done wrong?"
Quite possibly nothing!
Many English speaking computer users in France have an email account in another country. It’s usually an easy matter to set up a programme like Outlook or Thunderbird to send and receive from the email accounts. However, if your ISP is Orange in France, there is a little tweak that you will need to do, so that you will be able to send emails.
Orange had a problem some time back with someone using their server to send several thousand emails. It actually resulted in some quite innocent users being banned as spammers! Because of this Orange changed their regulations in regards to email settings. Now, you can only use their own SMTP server, and it is not allowed to route emails through to any other server. The SMTP setting is what your email programme uses to send an email, and the POP setting is used to receive emails.
So, how do you get round this problem? It’s fairly simple usually. Follow the setup instucrutions and settings that you will have received with your UK based email account. Enter all settings as per these instructions except when it comes to the "SMTP (Outgoing Server)" settings. Instead of the ones that your given by your UK service provider, enter smtp.orange.fr and that should be all that it takes to get you online.
These settings only concern users of Orange internet or broadband in France.
