If you own a computer, you must have anti-virus software, of that there is no question. Due to the high numbers of viruses that can harm your computer, security software is a growth market. Unfortunately, like all areas of life, when the market sees an opportunity, many companies want to jump on the band-wagon. Which means there’s now a wide range of different software out there to protect your computer, and some of it is better than others.
Like all things, everyone has their favourite anti-virus programme and I guess that every IT professional, probably recommends their own favourite. But, before you pay out good money for software, please do a little homework. Would you buy a new car if there were many reports that the gearbox falls out over 50Km/H?
Every day, I come across a computer with a virus problem, caused, in part, to not having good anti-virus software. So I’d like to take this opportunity to dispel some myths:
- All anti-virus programmes are not the same
- All anti-virus programmes do not do the same things
- Any old anti-virus software will not protect your computer
- You do need to update your anti-virus EVERY day.
- Just because the anti-virus software come from a reputable supplier like Orange, doesn’t mean it’s any good. In fact we’ve had some clients who believed that they had to take the virus protection offered with Orange France internet accounts, which at €60 per year rates as one of the more expensive options out there!
- Spending money isn’t a guarantee that you’ll get a good anti-virus.
- You are more likely to receive a virus from a friend or co-worker than from a stranger. A huge percentage of viruses use your email address book to send themselves to new computers. Therefore these will always be sent to someone you know!
- The old adage “it will never happen to me” is a load of rubbish, because I can almost guarantee you, if you don’t use a good anti-virus programme, it will most certainly happen to you eventually!
